After 80 days, 20 hours and 39 minutes at sea, Steve Murphy and Leven Brown have crossed the finish line in Antigua as the final team to complete the 2015/16 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. Steve Murphy, 58 from Reigate in Surrey, left La Gomera in the Canary Islands on the 20th December 2015 as a soloist but was joined by seasoned Ocean-rower Leven Brown on the 23rd January to help further his progress and support him in reaching the Caribbean shores.
Steve, who had previously run from Land’s End to John O’Groats, had decided to swap land for sea when he signed up for the challenge. However, after thirty days at sea enduring sea sickness, mechanical failure and bad weather, Steve was at risk of not being able to complete his challenge, and a solution had to be found to help get him to Antigua.
Five-time world record holder Leven had spent many hours helping Steve to prepare for the race and decided to get on board after realising Steve’s hardships. Though no longer able to compete in the race, the team continued as a pair to help achieve Steve’s dream of rowing across the Atlantic.
Steve took on the challenge to raise money for YMCA and the development of their Inclusive Sports Facility.
eos are very proud of Steve and glad he has returned back safe and sound!
